I’ve often heard the sentiment that exploring outside your comfort zone is one of the most effective ways to learn and grow. As a girl from land locked Kansas, the ocean has always been a foreign place. I was 19 years old the first time I laid eyes on endless stretches of salt water.

As a photographer, underwater images have always captivated me. I loved the serenity and chaos all at once. So I began shooting in mountain lakes, streams, and canyons, but something always scared me about taking my camera into the ocean. When I moved to California a couple years ago I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn’t learn how to shoot in the ocean. It’s an ongoing process in which I’ve lost two cameras (I have a functioning underwater set up now thanks to SPL Waterhousings), and everyday in the water with my camera is a learning experience, pushing me outside my comfort zone, and sometimes pulling me over the falls.
